Description
Chateau Margaux 1985Margaux
1ts, 2bsl, 1lnl, 2lcc, 1nc
Bottle (2)
Carved in Granite: The Maine Cellar. From a distinguished private cellar in coastal Maine comes a collection built for long-term aging. Constructed in the 1970s and carved into granite bedrock, the cellar maintains stable conditions, with temperatures ranging from approximately 52°F to 60°F and consistently high humidity, while bottles are organized by region and vintage, many fitted with handwritten neck tags to minimize handling and preserve condition.
"Approaching full maturity, this beautifully sweet Chateau Margaux has a dense plum/purple color and a huge, sweet nose of black currants intermixed with licorice, toast, underbrush, and flowers. Medium to full-bodied with supple tannin and a fleshy, juicy, very succulent and multi-layered mid-palate..." (95 pts. Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book 4th Ed., Jan. 2003)
“The 1985 Château Margaux is the best First Growth of the vintage, when the late Paul Pontallier was just getting his groove on. At almost 40 years it is a spellbinding wine. This has a crystalline bouquet that soars from the glass with Morello cherries, crushed strawberry and light floral scents—precision, precision, precision. The palate follows suit with filigree tannins, a perfect line of acidity, balletic poise and focus. There's real fruit intensity to this First Growth and yet a paradoxical weightlessness on the finish. A brilliant wine that is à point.” (98 pts. Neal Martin, Vinous, June 2025)
