Chateau Margaux

Since the 12th century, the Chateau Margaux estate has been occupied. Pierre de Lestonnac planted grape vines in the 1570s. The estate was expropriated after the French Revolution, when Elie du Barry, the current owner, was executed. In 1802 the estate was bought by Bertrand Douat. It was torn down and rebuilt under Douat’s supervision. In 1925, Fernand Ginestet bought shares of the property, his son, Pierre Ginestet, took full ownership in 1949. Finally, in 2003, the estate fell into the hands of Corinne Mentzelopoulos.

Chateau Margaux is a total of over 650 acres, with approximately 200 acres being planted for red wines, and around 30 for white wine. The first wine, which is considered their best, is known as Grand Vin du Chateau Margaux. Fermentation for this wine takes place for 22 months in vats made from oak. Their second wine was given the name Pavillon Rouge du Chateaux Margaux in 1908. Pavillon Blanc du Chateaux Margaux is their white wine. All other wines that Chateaux Margaux produces is sold in bulk.

Chateaux Margaux is a full bodied wine with a beautiful, pure fruit taste. The best Chateau Margaux vintages were bottled in the mid-1900s, the early 1980s, late 1990s, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2010. The 2010 Chateaux Margaux has a deep purple color, beautiful depth in flavor, and wonderful notes of spice, tobacco and blackberries to coat your palate. The 2000 Chateaux Margaux delights your palate with tastes of black raspberries, dark chocolate, and ripe fruits. It’s a smoky, silky wine. The 1983 Chateaux Margaux has a concentrated, deep flavor, filled with tastes of truffle, tobacco and blackberry.

The Pavillon Rouge is a sophisticated second wine with floral scents. It is a medium bodied wine with a crisp finish, and a grape blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. Pavillon Blanc is their white wine, small amounts of this are produced compared to their red wines. It is filled with beautiful lemon scents and leaves a citrus feel on your palate paired with honeydew, to give you a refreshing finish. Chateau Margaux has been known to be one of the best Bordeaux wines, and sought out for centuries.
