Description
Chateau Margaux 1959Margaux

Bottle (12)
"Superbly balanced, with lovely, elegant fruit flavors. Quite succulent in style. Medium ruby-garnet, with an elegant, earthy strawberry aroma, balanced fruit and medium tannins." (93 pts. James Suckling, Wine Spectator, Oct. 1990)
"I was unprepared for the stunning showing of the 1959 Chateau Margaux to the extent that I wager I will never meet another bottle of the same quality. Without doubt this stands as the last great Margaux before the Mentzelopoulos family acquired the First Growth in 1978. The bouquet is entrancing: ineffable delineation and a spellbinding sense of mineralité that appears undiminished by the passing years. After 20-30 minutes I observed oyster shells and sea cave scents percolating through the veneer of black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins fashioned by the finest chisel in the set: incredibly well balanced with hints of kirsch towards the crystalline finish. This is simply the apotheosis of Chateau Margaux predating Paul Pontallier's reign." (99 pts. Neal Martin, Vinous, June 2018)
