Marchesi Antinori comes from a long history of winemakers. Since the year 1385, the Antinori family has played an active role in the Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri, the "Vintner's Guild." In this 600 years, twenty-six generations of Antinoris have dedicated their lives to creating some of the most spectacular wines in the world. Two main vineyard tracts make up the Tenuta Tignanello farm. The Solaia portion of the cru is about 50 acres in size while the Tignanello tract is nearly 145 acres in size. The conditions at this pristine location are ideal for the Marchesi's choice of late-ripening grapes which consist of Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. These favorites thrive in the high altitude and southwestern exposure with its rocky soil rich with limestone and clay stone from the early Miocene and Eocene eras, more than 20 million years old. The name Solaia is derived from the Italian word for sun."
