In 1881, Giuseppe Mascarello, a vine-tender in the Italian Monforte d'Alba village, purchased a modest plot of land known as Regione Pian della Polvere to start his own vineyard. This was Giuseppe Mascarello's dream and the vineyard became the Mascarello family business. Giuseppe Mascarello died in 1902, but his son Murizio carried on the family tradition by purchasing a farm in Monprivato and moved the family business there in 1904 to produce Barolo. Seeing that the grapes grown in Monprivato were subpar, Murizio started purchasing fruit from reliable local sources and began producing Dolcetto and Barbera wines under the Mascarello name. Today, Mauro Mascarello is the fourth generation of Mascarello winemakers. Mauro, his wife Maria Teresa and their son Giuseppe still run and manage the Mascarello farm at Monprivato today.
Producing primarily Barolos, the Mascarella vineyard still cultivates the keystone Nebbiolo grapes which are the main component in Barolo wines. In 1921, Murizio Mascarella used part of the Monprivato vineyard to plant Nebbiolo vines grafted with a distinctive Michet variety clone. Murizio's son Giuseppe would grub and replant the Nebbiolo vineyards multiple times but interestingly in 1963 he replanted the same Michet variety clone as his father had forty-two years prior. Today Mauro, a fourth generation Mascarello winemaker still grows Nebbiolo in the Monprivato vineyard just as his family has for more than one hundred thirty-five years, and used the very same Nebbiolo clone again in 1983 just as his grandfather Murizio and father Giuseppe had twice before. This innovation led to the creation of the infamous "super-riserva Barolo Cà d'Morissio," which is still referred to today as one of the greatest Barolos ever made.
As mentioned above, the Mascarello Cà d'Morissio shares the spotlight with only two other contenders, Giacosa's Rocche del Falletto Riserva and Giacomo Conterno's Monfortino as the greatest of all Barolos."
