Araujo Estate Wines is a California wine estate founded by Bart and Daphne Araujo. After acquiring the property, originally a vineyard, the Araujo family built a winery and turned the historic vineyard into Araujo Estate Wines.
The 162-acre estate is located in Calistoga, California, within the Napa Valley Appellation. Within the estate is the notable and historic Eisele Vineyard. The Eisele Vineyard was planted in the 1880’s and originally produced Riesling and Zinfandel. The vineyard started producing Cabernet in 1964. Eisele Vineyard grapes have produced some of the best flavored and most noteworthy Cabernet Sauvignons since then. The 38-acre vineyard is surrounded by the Palisades Mountains and sits on earthy, well-drained soils, helping to produce its distinct flavors. Araujo Estate Wines have farmed organically since the late 1990s, which has improved the health and flavor of the estate’s grapes. In 2002 the estate hired Steve Jobs’ gardener to convert the land specifically to biodynamic farming.
Araujo is best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate produced its first vintage of the Eisele Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in 1991. Araujo now produces 2,000 cases of its Cabernet Sauvignon yearly. Depending on the vintage, the blend can range from 75% Cabernet to 92% Cabernet. Three quarters of the Eisele Vineyard is dedicated to producing the esteemed Cabernet Sauvignon. Flavors include black currant, chocolate, cedar, and blackberry and finish with a mineral taste. The depth of flavor of the wine is one of its most noted features. The wine is also known for its ability to age for several years. The estate also produces 2,000 bottles total of Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, and a Cabernet-based wine called Altagracia.
The 2010 Eisele Cabernet Sauvignon is regarded as one of the vineyard’s best vintages. It has received 98 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, 97 points from James Suckling and 95 points from Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar. In general, 2010 was one of the best years for Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons.
Araujo sells only to its subscribers list and sometimes sells out before all bottles can be distributed. The esteemed Cabernet Sauvignon can cost well over $300 a bottle and is considered a five-start wine.
In July, 2013, the Araujo family sold the historic Eisele Vineyard to Chateau Latour, a French wine estate owned by billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault.
