Domaine Leroy’s first vintage may be 1988, but they are far from a new producer. The history of the domaine runs deep, as does the pedigree of the family and it’s winemaking. The Leroy brand was first started in 1868 by Francois Leroy, who was the owner of the vines in Auxey-Duresses. He owned vines at a number of other places as well, including Meursault, Pommard, Chambertin, Musigny, Clos Vougeot, and Richebourg. The Domaine Leroy brand really started to come into prominence when it was sold to Francois’ grandson, Henri Leroy, in 1942. Henri Leroy treated the Domaine Leroy brand just for what it was: a labor of love.
The extreme care and vigorous farming practices yield a microscopic production which leads to high prices, but with unparalleled quality to match. The unbelievable vineyard holdings only further add to the cache of the brand. The winery’s fanatical practices lead to wines of exotic flavors and unique power that is rarely seen in Burgundy. Her Musigny and Chambertin command some of the highest prices in Burgundy, and the stable of other Grand Crus regularly outpaces the pricing of any other producer, which can include her former employer, Romanee Conti.
