Owning a large portion of Grand Cru vineyard land are the reds and white of Comte de Vogue. These wines are described by many as exquisitely delightful, especially to those who like strong tannin texture and deep flavor. Pinot Noir grapes make up the majority of the wine produced, but de Vogue also does a pale-gold Chardonnay white. The origin of the Bourgogne Blanc vines is speculated to have begun at the request of the late Comtesse de Vogüé. This is a producer with strong family ties that date back over 500 years. Centuries later, Comte de Vogue has become one of the most popular wines in the Burgundy region of France (which is no small feat).
Their history dates back to the mid-1400s when owned by Jean Moisson. He is mentioned in literature as wealthy but not nobility, which was uncommon at that time among vineyard owners. Moisson purchased the land around the year 1450 and proceeded to build the Domaine of Comte de Vogue. The estate and its vines passed from generation to generation of Moisson's descendants and even remained in the family during the French Revolution. Twenty generations later, the estate is owned by Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette, the granddaughters of Comte Georges de Vogüé, who inherited Comte de Vogue in 1925 and serves as the producer's namesake.
After years of poor management during the mid-1900s, the estate is now under the control of capable hands, and the results show. The team who now manages these vines includes Jean-Luc Pepin (estate manager), winemaker François Millet and viticulturist Eric Bourgogne. Comte de Vogue now produce high-quality, coveted wines from vines that live around 40 years and which are managed through combined organic, guyot and cordon training systems.
The wines produced are the reds Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes Marres, Musigny Vielles Vignes and the one white, Bourgogne Blanc. One of the rare producers where the entire line up can be seen in a single auction, and achieve top dollar, Comte Vogue continues to be one of the finest producers in all of Burgundy.
