Founded in 1832, Château Cheval Blanc is one of only four Bordeaux vineyards to hold the rank of the Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) for exceptional quality. The Château Cheval Blanc’s grand estate building is surrounded by gorgeous landscaping and acres of prime soil. The vine plots, encompassing more than 37 hectares, today look the same as they did in 1871 because Château Cheval Blanc knows not to mess with what works.
A modern renovation project was completed in 2011, conceived by Baron Albert Frere and Bernard Arnault, the vineyard's current owners. New landscaping along with a new winery, tasting and vinification rooms, and barrel cellars were added to the property.
Exceptional soil quality brings the vineyard’s two grape varieties to life: the Bouchet, or Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. At Château Cheval Blanc, the winemakers are given freedom to listen to nature, and each year’s vintage has a differing percentage of the two grape types. Grapes are often picked at different stages of ripeness, adding to the complexity and subtle differences present in different vintages. Only brand new French oak casks are used during the fermentation process.
The celebrated vineyard touts wine that’s good at any age, even just after bottling. The Château Cheval Blanc’s arguably most famous wine is the 1947 vintage, a groundbreaking year for the winemakers, partially thanks to the exceptional weather that year that produced large, sweet grapes. Few remaining bottles exist, and the coveted vintage has reportedly sold for six figures.
Silky, complicated and nearly perfect, Château Cheval Blanc’s 2000 vintage is widely considered one of the vineyard’s historical bests. Château Cheval Blanc rang in the new millennium with a decadent, balanced wine made from grapes that were high in sugar. The blend is 53 percent Merlot and 47 percent Cabernet Franc.
Exploding with hints of chocolate, licorice, black cherries and blackberries with a lingering finish, the 1990 is one of Château Cheval Blanc’s most celebrated. The 1990 is reported to get better and better with age. At 14.5 percent ABV, it is one of the heftiest vintage Cheval Blancs.
