Domenico Clerico was raised among Italian vineyards and as a boy would be seen following his father around, a grape farmer in the Piedmont region, curiously asking questions and learning all he could about caring for the delicate fruit with love and dedication, which remains his philosophy today. In 1976, Clerico's father offered him control of the small farm, which he accepted. Clerico and his wife Giuliana began their wine making adventure in 1977 when they purchased a modest piece of land in the hills of northwestern Italy called Bussia. It was here that he produced his first Barolo, "Bussia Briccotto." Clerico would spend the next forty years acquiring land for five more Italian vineyards dedicated to creating many wonderful and innovative varieties of Barolos.
Often labeled as a more modern style of producer, Clerico's wine still are among the best aging wines of Barolo, generally needing 20+ years to show their full character, yet so often offer up amazing drinking at a youthful age. Their Ginestra bottling is easily among the top wines produced from this highly acclaimed vineyard.
