Georges Roumier was born in the Charolais region of France. In 1924 he married Genevieve Quanquin and she brought with her, as was customary back then, a dowry in the peculiar form of vineyards. The dowry vineyards were appropriately named Domaine G. Roumier. In the late 1920's, other local domains such as Tollot-Beaut, Gouges and Angerville began working with Frank Schoonmaker, the wine importer for the US. Georges Roumier joined this group. None of these wines would be domain-bottled until 1984. Georges had seven children, five boys who were all trained as successors. Georges also had two jobs: he ran Domain G. Roumier and managed the Comte Georges de Vogue, so of his eldest two boys one took the position at Roumier while the other learned to manage de Vogue. Georges retired in 1961 with son Christophe taking his father's previous role at Roumier full-time.

Christophe Roumier is now running the G. Roumier vineyards and his philosophy is that they are "not in the business of making Pinot noir, but we do make wines from terriors which express themselves through the Pinot noir." Roumier owns vineyards in some of the best sites in Burgundy, including Chambolle Musigny Amoureuses, Bonnes Mares, and Musigny, and are among the three most sought after wines at auction.

Largely considered to be one of the premier names of the auction world, Roumier's wines are also among the best being made in Burgundy, and even wines for outside the top years are highly coveted. These wines having a remarkable track record for aging.
