Comtes Lafon

The history of Comte Lafon Vineyards dates back to 1894 when the scholar Jules Lafon married Marie Boch, the daughter of wine merchants and estate owners in Meursault, France. Today, Jules Lafon's great-grandchild Dominique Lafon is the mastermind and owner behind the very popular whites and enjoyable reds that carry the Lafon name. Along with the other vineyards that hail from the Burgundy region, this estate produces some of the most exquisite wines in the world. 

Historically, the Boch vineyard estates consisted of those from Monthélie, Volnay Champans, Volnay Santenots-du-milieu and Clos de la Barre et En la Barre. Once Jules Lafon entered his wife's family business, he expanded upon it by purchasing additional land including le Montrachet, la Goutte d'Or, les Genevrières-dessus, les Perrières, Volnay Santenots, Volnay Clos des Chênes and part of Les Charmes. Following his death in 1940, sons Pierre and Henry fell into ownership of the land parcels, although they seemed disinterested. Parts were sold until Henry Lafon's son, Renée Lafon, stepped in. 

During the time that Pierre and Henry Lafon owned the land, the Comte Lafon estates were rented to sharecroppers. This practice persisted until Dominique Lafon took over from his father Renée, and gained full control of his property by putting an end to the rentals. Dominique Lafon seems to have inherited a pride and responsibility from his father and great grandfather. Since the 1990s, he has converted his practice and the vineyards into an organic, chemical-free business.

Despite owning a piece of Le Montrachet, Lafon is best known for his inspiring and ageworthy Meursaults. His Perrieres and Charmes are riveting wines that among the hardest whites to find in all of Burgundy, and are found in the top restaurants throughout the world.
