The original Chateau Pichon Baron was once part of a larger estate established during the reign of Louis XIV. By 1850, the estate was further divided between Baron Raoul Pichon de Longueville and his three sisters. He became the owner of the Chateau Pichon Baron, while they owned the Pichon Comtesse Lalande. Soon enough, the wines produced by Chateau Pichon Baron as well as Pichon Comtesse Lalande were rated an impressive Second Cru Classé at the Exposition Universelle de Paris of 1855. The estate was bought by AXA Millésimes in 1987 and modernization and beautification began at once.
The wines of the Pauillac commune are already renown for bringing the best of Bordeaux wines with their notes of fruit, oak, hints of dryness and sweetness and a subtle quality that reminds one of an opened box of fresh cigars. However, there are wines from Chateau Pichon Baron that truly stand out.
Not to be over shadowed by Pichon Lalande, this lauded 2nd Growth estate has been as dominant as any house in recent history. They have been on an amazing run since 2000, and their back to back success in 89 and 90 is a superb combo.
