The 28-acre Château Pétrus vineyard was first planted by the Arnaud family in the mid-18th century. In the 1880s, wines bearing the Petrus-Arnaud label had the attention of notable French wine connoisseurs.
During the first quarter of the 20th century, the Arnaud family established the Societe Civile du Chateau Petrusand a local woman known as Madame Edmond Loubat started to obtain shares of the estate. By the time World War II was over, Madame Loubat was the exclusive proprietor of Château Pétrus. In 1961, Madame Loubat's niece and nephew assumed ownership and control of the property. Today the esteemed and historical vineyard and winery belong to Madame Lacoste-Loubat and Jean-Pierre Moueix.
Of all the fine appellations in the famed Bordeaux region of France, the Pomerol Controlée is by far the smallest. As in the nearby Saint Emilion district, the grapes of Pétrus are predominantly Merlot with a smattering of Cabernet Franc. The small, blue-black fruits of old Merlot vines have a tendency to be lower in tannins than other wine grapes. Merlot grapes reach sweet maturity sooner than those of the Cabernet variety and produce wines that are deeply pigmented and intensely aromatic.
Château Pétrus is a relatively small producer making only around 4,000 cases of softly textured, richly aromatic red wine per year. The producer ferments wine in concrete tanks and ages wine in new oak barrels to which five egg whites are added for purposes of clarification. Pétrus wines are not strained prior to bottling.
Petrus is consistently among the most top wines in any vintage, and quite often can defy vintages that are often not considered top years. One of the most transcendent wines one can own, you simply cannot go wrong owning Chateau Petrus!
