About thirty miles from the city of Bordeaux lay the wine estate of Baron Phillipe de Rothschild, decisive man of vision, a poet and the man responsible for a revolution in the wine industry. Baron de Rothschild was the first to bottle wine at the chateau. Formerly, wines were delivered and sold in wooden barrels. The architect, Charles Siclis, designed what became the Grand Chai, also known as the Great Barrel Hall, at an estate in Mouton. Shortly thereafter, at Pauillac, a wine trading business was acquired by the Baron and in 1930; Mouton Cadet became the world famous select wine from the Rothschild vineyards. Mouton’s quality was recognized in 1973, as it became the 5th of the First Growths, the only wine to ever be elevated to that status. His creativity extended to customizing wine labels, designed by famous sculptors and artists. The Rothschilds made an exception to this in the year 2000 with a special millennium label with wines bottled in gold enamel.
