Chateau Ausone is a Bordeaux wine located close to the town of Saint-Emilion. It is named after the 4th century poet, Ausonius. The estate can be dated to the 18th century, though it is rumored to have medieval history, it was then owned by Jean Cantenat. It was inherited by Edouard Dubois who brought the chateau through the difficult 19th century. After he died, his wife and step children took over the estate. The Vauthier’s bought the estate in the 1990s.
The vineyard is 17 acres, it includes the grape blend of 50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Merlot. The vineyard is perched atop a limestone slope. The best Chateau Ausone vintages are said to be 2012, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2001, 2000 and 1998. This wine is unlike most other wines due to the limestone deposits in the soil.
The Chateau Ausone has an intense mineral character. The fruit is pure which gives the wine a rich, full-bodied taste without being heavy. The tannins are ripe. The wine is beautifully aromatic and filled with black, blue, and dark red fruits, with a hint of licorice. The vinification of Chateau Ausone takes place in vats of wood. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for up to 2 years. Chateau Ausone is the second most expensive wine in Saint-Emilion Grand Cru made from Bordeaux blend.
The 1998 Chateau Ausone is a full-bodied wine, offering a unique mineral taste along with plum, licorice, and black fruits. Another vintage, the 2000 Chateau Ausone, is a full-bodied rich, expensive tasting wine. This wine also offers mineral hints and combines them with cherry, raspberry, licorice and stone. It is a thick, silky wine that leaves a lavish feeling on your tongue.
Their second wine is the La Chapelle de Ausone, which is normally a blend of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet France. In select vintages Cabernet Sauvignon is added. This is considered a medium-bodied wine. It offers notes of tobacco, vanilla, cocoa and black raspberry. It is fresh, ripe and charming on the palate.
The Chateau Ausone is a vineyard producing rich, beautiful wines. These wines are the perfect taste for any connoisseur, and would make a beautiful addition to any collection.
