    Hermitage 1961
    La Chapelle, P. Jaboulet
3cm, 1bsl, excellent color and condition with integrated strip label
    Bottle (1)

"This is unquestionably one of the greatest wines made in the twentieth century. In the two dozen tastings where I have had the 1961 La Chapelle, I rated it 100 points twenty times. The opaque purple/garnet color is accompanied by spectacular aromatics representing the essence of old vine Syrah (smoked meat, pepper, hoisin sauce, and soy). As the wine sits in the glass, notions of pepper, new saddle leather, grilled meat, and awesome levels of blackberry, plum, and black currant liqueur-like notes emerge. Extremely unctuous, with compelling concentration and purity, this full-bodied, seamless, mouthfilling 1961 is truly immortal. It still possesses a freshness and vigor that defy its nearly forty years of age. It should continue to drink well for two more decades. Prodigious stuff!" (100 pts Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #129, June 2000)

"This wine was inserted as a ringer in a tasting of old vintages of some extraordinary Bordeaux. I was able to guess what it was, but not without difficulty. At first I thought it was a 1961 Latour a Pomerol, given its sweet nose and expansive, lavishly rich palate. However, with airing, some of the wild game-like, smoked duck aromas that I associate with Syrah began to emerge. The wine is in extraordinary condition. Still improving, it exhibits an unctuous texture, unbelievable concentration, and a profound bouquet. The finish is out of this world. It is unquestionably one of the greatest wines ever made! Still sweet and compellingly rich, this monumental wine can be drunk now as well as over the next 20-30 years. Immortal!" (100 pts Robert Parker, Jan. 1997)
