Description

Romanee St. Vivant 1998
Domaine de la Romanee Conti
#03151, #03152
Bottle (2)

Property from the cellar of a meticulous and dedicated student of all things oenological. This prudent thinning represents less than 20% of his holdings, all purchased carefully and stored under immaculate temperature and humidity control.

"I have noticed that some bottles of the '98 DRCs have slightly cloudy appearances and reduced aromas. This most recent bottle though possessed a beautifully spicy nose of wonderfully complex and now fully mature secondary fruit aromas. The medium full, rich and equally spicy flavors are shaped by now relatively pliant tannins on the delicious, balaned and lingering finish." (91 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, April 2015)

"A beautifully spicy nose is finally beginning to open to reveal wonderfully complex and spicy aromatics and fruit that is still 100% primary. The medium full, rich, spicy and intense flavors possess ripe tannins underpinning the considerable but softening structural spine and it's clear that this will definitely require another 6 to 8 years in the cellar. Multiple, and consistent, notes." (91 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, Aug. 2008)

"Saturated ruby-red. Sappy, rather wild aromas of raspberry, smoke, tar and mulch; more deeply pitched than the Grands-Echezeaux but still quite tangy. Fat, sweet and full, but less precise and lively than the Grands-Echezeaux; flavors of redcurrant and iron. Fairly rich wine, finishing with good breadth and dusty, slightly dry tannins." (90+ pts. Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, March 2001)
