Description
Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 19941lscl
Bottle (5)
"This is, to date, the greatest Vintage Port ever from here. It overwhelmed me years ago when I tasted it from barrel, but only now is it crossing gradually into its drinking window. The intensity is still mind-boggling here, with sweet-and-sour notes as well as mounds of clay. There are violets lurking somewhere too. A full-bodied, medium sweet and sublime Vintage Port, showing forest fruits and freshly picked blackberries on the palate in the form of a creamy, focused and tannic texture." (100 pts. James Suckling, Oct. 2012)
"When tasting young vintage ports, Taylor is always the most backward. Yet potentially, it has the capability to be the most majestic. This classically made, opaque purple-colored wine is crammed with black fruits (blueberries and cassis). It reveals high tannin and a reserved style, but it is enormously constituted with massive body, a formidable mid-palate, and exceptional length." (97 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, Oct. 1996)
“In mid-January 1997, this is the Vintage Port (along with its sibling, Fonseca), created quite a stir when both were anointed "Two Perfect 1994 Ports" and rated 100 points by James Suckling, as co-Wines of the Year, on the cover of the Wine Spectator. David Guimaraens who created both in his inaugural vintage, became an instant superstar. A horse of another color and the biggest and brightest young Port that we've had to this point in the tasting. When time permits, I decant this between 10-12 hours and my British Port loving friends often go as far as 24 hours before drinking this babe in the woods. Big black brambly fruits, fig and some high-toned notes of lavender, fennel, and tar with a snippet of tapenade emerge from the glass in a glorious fruit bomb; more than a quarter of a century since birth. I should add that it required a significant amount of effort, swirling vigorously, as it's still a very tight young beast of a Port. Juicy black plum, briary blackberry, mocha and licorice flavors frame this wild stallion. Voluminous and densely packed with smooth and approachable tannins that remain subverted to the fruit. Drink now if you dare, but it will certainly be better after the mid-point of this century and likely will surpass 2075 ... with ease!” (97+ pts. Roy Hersh, For the Love of Port, Feb. 2020)
