“Then it was time again! How do they do it? Along with Rémi Krug I premiere tasted the 88' beside the outrageously good 89', and could hardly believe my taste buds that signaled that the 88' was even better. They themselves compare the wine with the 81', 55' and 61'. Personally, I like it at the 66' and the ultra-elegant 79'. The finesse is unbeatable and the acidity is very noticeable. This is a wine that will be enjoyed by our grandchildren. Most certainly advise against the direct consumption of this young wine. I am of a different view as I believe that part of the happy-tear-producing subtlety disappears as the wine matures. I hope you accept it as an explanation for the unusually tight scoring gap between today and the potential top. In 2022 at its peak. 1 point lower in 2025.” (97 pts. Richard Juhlin, Champagne Club, Oct. 2025)
“Krug's 1988 Brut has long numbered among my very favorite vintages for this house, with the best bottles flirting with a three-digit score. Offering up complex aromas of apricot, citrus oil, candied peel, toasted brioche and honeycomb, it's full-bodied, concentrated and incisive, with a deep, layered and tightly wound core, racy acids and a searingly chalky finish. If on release the 1988 got less attention than the more immediate, head-turning 1990 and 1989 vintages, with time it is proving itself the most serious of those three consecutive releases.” (98 pts. William Kelley, Wine Advocate, July 2020)
