Biggest Misconceptions about Vintage Port

Roger Voss of Wine Enthusiast takes a look at the approach to drinking vintage ports in the USA. He writes, "Wine drinkers worry about vintage Port. They know about it, they admire it, they maybe worship it from afar. But when it comes time to open a bottle and drink it, they hit a wall of myths, misconceptions and plain misunderstandings." He's right, of course. Port is just another wine — fabulous, delicious, and there to be enjoyed however you wish. Voss's article helps debunk some of the classic Port myths, and we encourage you to try debunking them yourself with one (or a few!) of the many vintage Ports we have available for direct purchase at HA.com.

  Consign Now

Looking to consign your wines? We are ready to help. Send in your lists for a free estimate of current market performance for your wines. The market for Bordeaux remains red-hot while the blue-chip houses in Burgundy, the Rhone Valley and Italy continue to be very consistent performers. Generally speaking, wines of top pedigree are outperforming their previous highs established in 2007, making this a great time to thin out the cellar a bit. There is still room in both our Signature and online-only auctions for all kinds of property, from the top-achieving segment of the market to daily drinkers. With over 750,000 bidder-members, we've got buyers for any wine of quality that perhaps isn't getting the attention in your cellar it once did.

  Website Tips: Bid Protection

Tired of losing lots by one increment? Now, you can choose to add Bid Protection to any lot when you place a proxy bid through Heritage Live, If your proxy bid is outbid, Bid Protection will automatically increase your bid by one additional increment, giving you an additional chance to win. You can use Bid Protection on all items available for proxy bidding through Heritage Live, except for the current lot and the next upcoming lot.

There are three ways that you can add Bid Protection to your Heritage Live Proxy bids. If you are bidding from the lot listing at the bottom of the Heritage Live interface, just click on the Bid Protection box next to your bid or bids, and then click the Bid LiveProxy button.

If you've clicked on the link to the lot description, enter your bid, check the box below your bid amount, and click on the "Bid Now!" Button.

Finally, you can go to the MyBids/MyTrackedLots tab and add or remove Bid Protection at any time, even for items on which you've already placed LiveProxy bids. In addition, the status column will point out all items where you have Bid Protection.

Bid Protection is designed to add one additional increment to your bid, if it is needed to try to win the lot. It is not protection against much higher Internet or proxy bids.

Tiffany, Rolex, Patek Phillipe And More Top Fine Timepieces Auction

Swiss Rare Gold Minute Repeater With Unique Polo Theme Case & Automaton, circa 1895
More than 300 fine and unique timepieces, led by an array of rare repeater pocket watches, will thrill collectors in Heritage Auctions' Nov. 18 Timepieces Signature Auction, taking place at the Fletcher-Sinclair Mansion (Ukrainian Institute of America) at 2 E. 79th Street (at 5th Ave.).

"The variety of lots being offered in this auction is truly outstanding," said Jim Wolf, Director of Fine Timepieces for Heritage Auctions, "with premier examples by the most respected names in modern watch making as well as rare vintage wristwatches, small unique clocks and a wide assortment of complicated pocket watches."

A pocket watch that is already receiving a great deal of attention is a colorful and whimsical Swiss Rare Gold Minute Repeater With Unique Polo Theme Case & Automaton, circa 1895. This scarce and unusual watch represents the popular sport of polo, which became the favorite of the elite at the beginning of the 20th century. It is estimated at $15,000+.

Tiffany minute repeater, with split second chronograph
A very rare and important Tiffany minute repeater, with split second chronograph, is also on the auction block with an estimate of $20,000+. The watch was a gift from infamous Wall Street financier Jay Gould to his right hand man, Giovanni Morisini, in 1884. Another historically important watch is a complicated Grandjean minute repeater with calendar and moon phase, estimated at $10,000+, which was presented in 1888 to the Speaker of the New York assembly, the Honorable Fremont Cole.
Rolex Ref. 6263 Very Fine Oyster Cosmograph
More than 60 Rolex timepieces will give wristwatch collectors a wide array to choose from, including a gorgeous Rolex Ref. 6263 Very Fine Oyster Cosmograph, circa 1974 (estimate: $20,000+), a sleek Rolex Ref. 6263 Rare Steel Oyster Cosmograph Daytona, circa 1979 (estimate: $15,000+), a reference 6202 Tropical dial Turn-O-Graph (estimate: $8,000+), a rare 6538 Big Crown James Bond (estimate: $40,000+) and a stunning reference 1655 Double Red Mark IV Sea-Dweller Submariner (estimate: $15,000+).
Patek Philippe Ref. 5110 Platinum World Time wristwatch
One of the auction's most anticipated highlights is extremely fine Patek Philippe Ref. 5110 Platinum World Time wristwatch (estimate: $25,000+), a timepiece that is widely regarded by collectors as on its way to becoming a classic of horology.
Frank Muller prototype minute repeating wristwatch with perpetual calendar
One fortunate and savvy collector will have the chance to own a very important timepiece in the form of a Frank Muller prototype minute repeating wristwatch with perpetual calendar (estimate: $70,000+).

"This watch is accompanied by a letter, hand written and signed by Frank Muller," said Wolf, "in which he states that he personally made the watch in 1986 for the Vicenza Jewelry and Watch Fair. This represents as prime an opportunity to own a superlative timepiece as any Heritage has presented."

Works by Renoir, Potthast and Grandma Moses Highlight American & European Art Auction

Pierre-Auguste Renoir's Gabrielle en Rouge, 1903.
Three paintings by Edward Henry Potthast, discovered in a Texas collection after 90 years, and two Pierre-Auguste Renoir works are expected to lead Heritage's Nov. 15 American & European Art Signature® Auction. Offered online and at Heritage's Design District Annex, 1518 Slocum St., the sale is a carefully curated selection of American Masters, ranging from Andrew Wyeth and Grandma Moses to Milton Avery and Maxfield Parrish.

Renoir's Gabrielle en Rouge is one of nearly 200 paintings of Gabrielle Renard, his favorite model, and is expected to bring $500,000+. "Gabrielle en Rouge from 1903 is an incredible work for such a late period in the artist's long career," said Brian Roughton, Managing Director of Fine Art at Heritage.

It is highlighted by a second Renoir, a fragment of a larger composition, recently rediscovered in a Michigan collection. Buste de Jeune Fille measures 6-1/4 x 5 inches and is expected to bring $30,000+. The fragment appears at auction following extensive research by Heritage's fine art staff and authentication by the Wildenstein Institute, the world's primary authentication body for Renoir's works. It was previously identified in a photograph published in dealer Ambroise Vollard's 1918 compendium catalog and will now be included in the Wildenstein’s Catalogue Critique Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Three works by Potthast were recently discovered in a Sherman, Texas, collection. Prized for his depictions of beachgoers enjoying holidays on the coast, the three paintings will be included in Cincinnati dealer Mary Ran's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of Potthast's work, Roughton said. The first, Children at the Shore, is expected to bring $300,000+; Beach Scene may bring $100,000+; and A Maine Fisherman is expected to sell for $20,000+.

Robert Spencer's A River Mill Town.

Other highlights include but are not limited to:

Among the American impressionists is Robert Spencer's A River Mill Town. "This important work and fantastic find, is one of the few known 30 x 36 inch works not in private hands or a public collection of this subject," Roughton said. A River Mill Town is a grand view of village life perhaps inspired by the landscape and culture of Bucks County along the Delaware canal. It is expected to bring $150,000+.

Grandma Moses' The Old Checkered House in Cambridge Valley.
A rare work by the popular Grandma Moses, The Old Checkered House in Cambridge Valley, may bring $80,000+. It is one of the most famous of Moses' series of the historic inn on the Cambridge Turnpike in Washington County near her childhood home. Painted from memory, Grandma Moses created more than 20 depictions of the inn from 1941 to 1959. As a youth in the 1870s, she remembered seeing the landmark building with its bold façade of fourteen-inch red-and-white checkers. The subject was deeply personal for her: By the time she painted he Old Checkered House in Cambridge Valley, the house had ceased to exist for nearly 40 years. This work includes a distant steam locomotive, referencing the 1870s when she would have visited the inn, and winter recreation, notably children joyfully sledding in the foreground.
Andrew Wyeth's Coastal Survey.
Carrying provenance from the Brook Astor collection, Andrew Wyeth's Coastal Survey is expected to bring $80,000+. Painted very directly, a wind-buffeted fabric forming a rustic-looking tent shelters a geodetic survey marker Wyeth observed on the coast of Maine near Port Clyde during the summer of 1955. Coastal Survey, painted not far from the Wyeths' summer home, has been in private hands from the time it was painted and has never been publicly exhibited or offered at auction.
Hermann Herzog's Lazy Days, Everglades.

Hermann Herzog's commanding Lazy Days, Everglades is unique for its subject and size. "This painting is one of Herzog’s most sought after subjects, the Florida wilderness," Roughton said. "This particular work is even more rare and collectable because it is considered one of the largest Florida subjects painted by the artist." At an impressive 62 inches by 52 inches, Lazy Day Everglades stands to bring $50,000+.
