Hermitage 2013J.L. Chave
Bottle (6)
The Perfect Arc Cellar. This is one of those rare collections that touches upon all the most beautiful parts of the wine growing world, both deep and broad in its scope. Most every wine was purchased on release and stored in an impeccable temperature and humidity-controlled facility.
"Smoky dark berries, violet and black pepper on the nose and in the mouth. Juicy and precise, showing strong mineral cut and an echo of smokiness on the back half. #2, from Beaume: Aromas of blackberry, candied flowers and licorice, with a stony quality adding lift. The berry and licorice notes carry through on the palate, which also features a hint of black cardamom. #3, from l'Ermite: Intensely perfumed dark berry and black pepper scents, with a deeper licorice pastille quality emerging. Sappy and focused, showing strong spicy lift to the black and blue fruit flavors. Expands nicely on the back half. #4, from Méal: Sexy red fruit and floral pastille aromas show excellent clarity and a hint of allspice. Fresh, penetrating and pure, with superb focus to its raspberry and blood orange flavors. Drinks like a ripe pinot and finishes with serious cling. #5, from Bessards: Displays powerful cherry and cassis aromas sharpened by a peppery nuance. Bitter cherry and violet flavors show appealing sweetness and good spine thanks to juicy acidity. Smoky and focused, with excellent back-end lift and cut. The final wine should be expressive and fairly open soon after release, at least by the standards of Hermitage, with very good freshness and precision." (92-94 pts. Josh Raynolds, Vinous, Feb. 2015)
“Still in barrel at the time of this tasting, the 2013 Hermitage will certainly be one of the wines of the vintage. Offering classic, granite-induced notes of smoked dark fruits, graphite, searing minerality and bouquet garni, this sensational Hermitage has medium to full-bodied richness, beautiful mid-palate density and building tannin, all with the freshness and purity of the vintage. Reminiscent of a more backwards, tight, focused and granite-driven year (I asked Jean-Louis if there was a similar vintage he could recall, he commented that he couldn't think of one), it has solid ripeness in its aromas and flavors, good sweetness in its tannin, and a great finish. I suspect it will need 7–8 years of cellaring and keep for 20–25 years or more.” (94–97 pts. Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Dec. 2015)
