Description
Chateau Le Pin 1985Pomerol
bn, lgsl
Magnum (1)
"This wine went through an unusual stage where it seemed disjointed, too oaky, and light, but that has all changed over the last 1-2 years. The wine is now a deep plum color with some lightening at the edge. The nose soars from the glass offering up an enticing fragrance of smoked herbs, sweet, jammy, curranty fruit, and toasty oak. In the mouth, caramel, toffee, and mocha blend with jammy cherry fruit to offer an unctuously-textured, thick, satiny smooth wine that is impossible to resist." (93pts Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book, 3rd Ed., Jan 1998)
“The 1985 Le Pin is a wine that I have tasted three times from bottle and magnum. It has always been one of my favorite vintages from that decade and is unequivocally better than Petrus. In bottle, this has a mellow, warm and inviting bouquet with summer fruit and light savory notes. It's complex and utterly beguiling as rose petal and sous-bois scents emerge. The palate is beautifully balanced and sensual, the plush dark cherry and wild strawberry fruit framed by fine tannins, lavish yet sophisticated in bottle. The 1985 is even better from magnum, ebullient and multidimensional on the nose with traces of ripe oranges. The palate shows more linearity and feels more backward than the bottle, yet it is still compelling on the finish. This is fabulous.” (96 pts. Neal Martin, Vinous, March 2025)
"A sexy tart of a wine, this open-knit, expensive, fleshy wine offers up sumptuous notes of smoked herbs, melted caramel, espresso, jammy black currant and cherry fruit, and plenty of licorice." (94 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, Dec. 2002)
