Description
Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1985Pauillac
3bn, 3ts, 1hs, different importers
Bottle (12)
"The 1985 Lafite is revealing more class and complexity than I predicted. A moderately intense, cedary, woody, herb and berry-scented bouquet is attractive. The wine is open-knit and ripe, with fine tannins, sweet, medium-bodied, mineral, and cassis-scented flavors, fine depth, and a graceful, harmonious feel. It is beginning to blossom and appears to possess more depth and character than I had thought." (90pts Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #88, Aug 1993)
"It has a beautiful nose that is just classic Lafite. It is still fresh yet understated, stately even, with tobacco and cedar-tinged red berry fruit. It is not a powerful bouquet, but there is something...magnetic about it. The palate is still youthful with fine tannin, like the nose, understated yet very well balanced. The acidity here is perfectly judged with an almost nonchalant finish. You almost miss its virtues - it is just so self-effacing and insouciant. Just a really lovely Lafite-Rothschild at the peak of its powers." (93 pts. Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, July 2016)
“Winemaker Eric Kohler told me that the 1985 Lafite-Rothschild suffered blockage due to summer heat. This ex-château bottle has a lovely nose with melted dark chocolate, underbrush, cedar and allspice mixed into the mature red fruit, just a tiny bit sauvage. The palate is medium-bodied and quite savoury on the mid-palate, with supple tannins, dried blood and truffle interwoven into black fruit. Supple towards the finish with a slight piquancy, this is not mind-blowingly complex but brims over with charm. Drinking perfectly now.” (94 pts. Neal Martin, Vinous, June 2025)
“A week after tasting it from bottle, I re-tasted the 1985 Lafite-Rothschild from imperial. This has greater purity on the nose, perhaps less sauvage with vivacious red fruit, though cedar and allspice traits still come through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with those same pliant tannins that lend this First Growth such fluidity. This is not powerful—it is Lafite not Latour—but it is beautifully balanced with hints of black truffle and pencil shavings towards the finish. The 1985 is utterly charming and drinking beautifully.” (96 pts. Neal Martin, Vinous, June 2025)
